There’s something truly captivating about mosaic art. It’s the perfect balance between chaos and harmony—a dance between broken pieces and the beauty they become when brought together.

My journey with mosaics began when I stumbled upon an old window frame left on the street. It was weathered, worn, and ready to be thrown away. But I saw possibility. I started collecting tiny pieces of glass—some shiny, some opaque, some colorful—and began arranging them within the frame. What came out of that experience was not just a piece of art, but a profound reminder: even the broken pieces of life can create something beautiful.

FORMAT:

Two classes, each up to 3 hours

Level: Beginner–Intermediate (basic Excel knowledge required)

CLASS 1 – Building the Excel Art Inventory Foundation

Goal:

Create a working Excel inventory with consistent artwork records.

Steps:

1. Introduction and overview of why artists need inventory systems.

2. Create a new Excel workbook 

3. Add column headers:

4. Create an Artwork ID 

5. Add dropdown menus for Medium, 

CLASS 2 – Photo Organization and Linking

Goal:

Link artwork photos to Excel and track history.

Steps:

1. Review inventory file.

2. Create a main folder called Art_Inventory_Photos.

3. Create subfolders by year.

4. Rename artwork photos using Artwork ID.

5. Link each photo to the Image Link column in Excel.

6. Track exhibitions, sales, loans, and notes.

7. Review best practices and backups.

Final Outcome:

Students leave with a complete Excel inventory and a linked photo system

to track each artwork’s history.
