In grade 7 we focus on the art principles. First they design a folder where they store their future art principle compositions. This year we started with creating the illusion of distance in a picture using one point perspective. In their drawings the art principles vary. Some have a VARIETY of colors, others show MOVEMENT...here are some! I'll be adding more! Later we will be focusing more on specific art principles...
We focus on one art principle at a time. For each principle we look at examples in a power point show of both famous artists and student work and how they create the art principles in their work. I stress the importance of planning their compositions (using what they learned about in grade 6), sketching light first, and taking the time to blend and use good craftsmanship. examples of Variety examples of emphAsis

We also talk about how artist create the illusion of distance on a 2 dimensional surface. We look at a print of Dominique Appia's fantasy drawing and a drawing by Van Gogh showing one point perspective.
Word Art is another fun drawing. They can create a word and fill it with images or words related to that word, or create a scene and fill it with related words.
We also did a fun drawing using oil pastels. First you choose your colors, keeping in mind the word you decide to write later. For example, below for "ocean" they used cool colors and for USA they used red, white and blue. After covering the page with oil pastels nice and dark, they then cut out letters, put them down and painted over them like a stencil. Then if they wanted, they could carve lines or words into the paint with a popsicle stick.
Students had to decide whether they wanted to make a piece of art that visually connected with 2 or 3 panels, called in paintings and murals in history called "diptychs-for 2 panels" and "triptychs- for 3 panels"
