When students first start art with me, I like to build their drawing confidence by teaching them some simple things to draw such as the duck (examples below), an underwater scene, and a moon with a face (I'll be adding examples of these soon!)

Then we start talking about fun ways of doing lettering and then 6 different ways to create an interesting
composition.   Look below to see where students used overlapping, shapes going off the edge, creating a frame,
showing movement, drawing their letters inside shapes, and using a horizon line.

CREATIVE FOLDERS BY GRADE 6      go to color schemes

I have a handout listing many different inspirations for fun ways of lettering that they do.  I also show them my Jim Davis Garfield collection where he created the word "Garfield" every Sunday in a different heading.  I also have a collection of different ways of lettering from various books and I show them the following books:  The Hidden Alphabet and The Z was Zapped by Chris Van Allsburg.

we then talk about the art elements:  line, shape, color, texture, and value

later we talk more about specific colors: click here to see great half warm/half cool pictures!

and while some students are finishing the individual element compositions, others beginning a combination composition (see below)
